Day 86: Burney Falls

The heat endures! I felt a bit in a slump today. Northern California is still beautiful, but it’s hard to appreciate marching day after day in these temperatures. The airconditioned room we slept in at the church was a real blessing and we stayed there until 2pm. Fitz texted me saying she was ahead of us now on the trail. Crazy how fast they’ve been going to catch up to us.

We set off and I raced ahead, trying to minimize my time in the heat. I soon found Fitz and a very sick-looking Stinger. Heat exhaustion. Hiking in the full sun for multiple days probably didn’t help. I was so glad to see them again.

But alas, overcooked Stinger was in no condition to hike on. They were going to walk back to the road and hitch to Burney Falls, trying to find a place to cool Stinger down. Too bad, we had to say goodbye again.

There was more trail magic further down the road. Really nice, but for some reason it didn’t register with me. Think I’m more tired than I dare to admit. Raven, a girl who did the trail last year and was doing the trail magic, showed us some disgusting photos of a spider bite she got back then, on her first night of cowboy camping. The stuff of nightmares.

We made a quick stop at Burney Falls to go to the lookout and quickly continued on to our campsite. Veto tagged along and set up camp at the same spot.
